World's First Nuclear-Powered Submarine: USS Nautilus

The U.S. Naval Submarine Base features the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, which visitors can now tour. The USS Nautilus was first launched on January 17, 1955.

On July 23, 1958, the USS Nautilus was launched for the first underwater crossing of the North Pole. The submarine crossed the North Pole on August 3, 1958.

On April 11, 1986, eighty-six years to the day after the birth of the Submarine Force, the USS Nautilus was opened to the public as the first and finest exhibit of its kind in the world.
