First Restaurant in America
Founded on December 13, 1827, by John and Peter Delmonico, Delmonico's restaurant in New York City was the first restaurant or public dining room in
America. Note: The first shop they opened was a café and pastry shop with the official restaurant opening next door in 1830.

First Rescue Mission
in America
Jeremiah McCauley accepted salvation after reading Scripture given to him in
Sing Sing prison by the International Bible Society. After release, McCauley and his wife Maria began
McCauley Water Street Mission in New York City in October, 1872, the first rescue mission
in America. It is still active today as the New York City Rescue Mission.
